Independent living: A closer look

Active and healthy older adults passionate about living life to the fullest often find independent living an attractive alternative to living at home: They want maintenance-free living, an active lifestyle, the freedom to focus on personal interests and needs, and the socialization and security that these settings include. And although these residents are typically healthy, they may choose independent living for its access to health care services.

Typically, independent living communities offer an array of services designed to help active seniors maintain their freedom and opportunity. So, the community often includes:

  • Events and activities that engage the mind, body and spirit
  • Daily restaurant-style meals
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation
  • Fitness and wellness programs
  • Beauty salon and barbershop
  • Library and computer center
  • Common gathering spaces
  • 24-hour security
  • Banking services
  • Access to health care, if needed

The cornerstones of independent living are choice, freedom and community.

What should I look for?
Location, lifestyle, services and amenities — these are the factors people usually consider first. Active communities provide a wealth of on-campus activities and regularly offer off-campus activities, too.

Many seniors also look for an independent living community that gives them access to long-term health care, so they or their families won’t need to make decisions about care later.

Residential choices are widely varied. High-rise apartment buildings, a campus of duplexes, free-standing homes and apartment homes — you’ll find almost any kind of residence you can imagine.

Independent living includes rental communities as well as communities that offer a variety of residential contracts and may require entrance and monthly service fees. Some contracts can provide reduced rates for long-term care, if you ever need these types of services in the future. Or they may offer care at little or no extra cost beyond the monthly fee you already pay. When comparing independent living choices, it’s important to ask plenty of questions and understand fully what your options are.
